The 5 Most Effective Potty Training Methods

The biggest reason why potty training can be so frustrating is because most parents don’t know where to start and don’t have a step-by-step method to follow. If you just go through a random process of trial and error, you will have success eventually, but it will take much longer than necessary.

In this article I will show you the 5 most effective potty training methods, together with the pros and cons of each. These methods are not one size fits all, so the best method to choose depends entirely on your situation and what you think will work best with your child. Once you have chosen one of these methods it is a matter of some preparation and then just doing it.

1. Dr. Phil’s One Day Potty Training Method

drphilDr Phil’s method involves the use of a special potty training doll that drinks and wets. The idea behind this method is that the best way to learn something is to teach it. By teaching the doll to use the potty, the child will quickly learn to do it him or herself in the process. Since Dr Phil demonstrated this method on his show in 2002, it has become one of the most popular and successful potty training methods.

The best way to get started with Dr. Phil’s one day potty training method is to get the complete potty training in one day system for boys or for girls. This system includes the Potty Training In One Day Book (or DVD) that takes you through the whole system in a step-by-step guide. You can also buy the above book and various items required by this method separately. See this checklist for more information. Watch the video below for a short segment from Dr. Phil’s program.

A popular variation of the one day potty training method can be found in Dr. Wayne Jensen’s “Secret Blueprint to Potty Training“. Dr. Jensen’s method is very similar to Dr.Phil’s, but you don’t need to buy any of the special dolls or other items required by Dr. Phil’s method. Instead he teaches you how to use existing dolls and other household items to accomplish the same. Read More About the Secret Blueprint to Potty Training here.

The best way to get started with this method is through the Potty Training Power program by Sean and Cindy Platt.

The Potty Training Power guide provides a detailed potty training plan, together with various bonuses and full email support from the authors. This method has proven to be very effective over the decades and combined with a  program like Potty Training Power, it is definitely one of the most popular ways to potty train toddlers.

3. The Naked and $75 Potty Training Method

The Naked and $75 method is a simple, inexpensive potty training technique that was introduced by well known family psychologist Dr. John Rosemond. One or more potties are provide throughout the house and after demonstrating what the potties are for, the child is left naked for 3 to 5 days until he or she learns to use the potty themselves. The basic idea behind this method is that a greater awareness of bodily functions is created. Since it is uncomfortable to have poop or pee running down their leg, the child will quickly learn that it is better to use the potty. This method is easy and fairly quick (3 to 5 days), but it can get very messy and because it uses a negative form of learning, it is not recommended by most experts. The $75 is for the inevitable carpet cleaning that you will have to do afterwards, in case you were wondering.

4. Infant Potty Training

The infant potty training method is used to potty train children from a very early age (less than 6 months). While this method is hardly used by modern parents, it is the most commonly used method in developing countries and cultures where the use of disposable nappies are virtually nonexistant. The key to this method is for the parents to learn the body language and natural rhythm of their child to such an extent that they can anticipate when it’s time to go to the potty. The parent then simply holds the child over the potty at the right time to do their business. Infants will also learn the physical sensations that preceeds elimination and quickly discover how to signal when they need to relief themself. The benefit of this method is that the child will be potty trained at a very early age, but it is also a very time consuming process that can takes months to accomplish.

5. The Child Will Go Potty When the Time is Right Method

With this method, potty training is seen as one of the major developmental milestones in a child’s life (like crawling, walking and talking). The parent introduces the potty and then it is left up to the child to start using the potty and train themselves whenever they are ready to do so. This method is popular, because it requires very little preparation and commitment from the parent, ideal for busy families and working parents.  While this method is widely recommended by Pediatrics, it is also not very effective and can take anywhere from 1 to 6 months or longer to potty train a child. The unpredictability of this method is not ideal in today’s modern lifestyle where play groups or pre-school nurseries only take children that are already potty trained.
